Arnold Schwarzenegger dropped the new name for the fifth Terminator today, as if he sensed that the public was starting to forget that yes, there IS another Terminator film heading to theaters next year. Part of the confusion as to whether this movie was still in play is the fact that the film’s title has been changing rather quickly in its recent production window. What started in April as Terminator: Genesis became plain old Terminator only two short months after, and with production now wrapped, yet another title has been chosen to carry the series into it’s fifth installment.
Schwarzenegger’s Instagram feed was the initial platform for this information’s launch. Just to confirm that this isn’t a gag, start up the drum roll and cast your eyes on this, your new Terminator title!
Apparently Terminator: Genesis is too passe, but Terminator: Genisys is hardcore enough for the kids to come and see the sequel their older brother keeps complaining about at the dinner table. Needless to say, this strategy is working about as well as you’d think. In other words, prepare for some comedic and misspelled Twitter backlash, starting with this obvious prediction!
Three seconds was way too kind for Terminator: Genisis. And here’s another tweet with a fan applying this stupid name retroactively to Genesis titles of future past:
And then, there’s my personal favorite Gump tweet that embarks on attempting to explain just why Terminator: Genisys is titled just that.
All snark aside guys, I’m still kind of looking forward to Terminator: Genisys for two big reasons. First, if the rumors are true, we’re going to see some wibbly wobbly timey wimey dancing around paradoxes, as the film’s plot has been said to take John Connor and the T-800 back to the events of the original Terminator film. If you’re going to start a new series of Terminator films, the original classic isn’t that bad of a starting off point.
And then there’s the most important reason as to why I’m actually still in the tank for Terminator: Genisys: Matt Smith is in it, and I still think he’s going to be the new embodiment of SkyNet. Until it’s flat out ruled out by official sources, I’m still going into this movie expecting The Doctor to become one of the most evil machine minds in science fiction history. Of course, all of the cautious optimism in the world still doesn’t make up for the fact that Terminator: Genisys is a really, REALLY dumb title.
Terminator: Genisys heads to theatres on July 1, 2015.
